Action research is a method that has shifted from the rigors of a formal experimental research scientific model to a purposeful, inquiry-based research approach to address real-world problems in their context across multiple disciplines and numerous settings. What makes action research different is that the approach is results-oriented, identifies and resolves iteratively, and uses the power of reflection for ongoing sustainment and improvement. In other words, the researcher is part of an overall solution to the prevailing problem throughout the research journey.
It is essential to understand it is not focused on generalizing results and enhancing the overall body of knowledge across the area of interest. The approach is laser-focused on localized problems and provides valuable insight and attention to resolve the here-and-now issues. Kurt Lewin is the father of action research, where he felt the traditional scientific inquiry model was ineffective in applying complex, social science-based problems in the real world. As a result, he conceptualized a means to get answers and use them iteratively and effectively.
